100 Days has gone by since October 7th, 2023. 10/7. The Black Sabbath. 100 Days where at least 132 Hostages are still held captive. 100 Days in the Dark. 100 days in fear. 100 days as hope continues though every second drains us. 100 Days.
I was planning on doing a post about this 100-day landmark. Then, once again, this hit the news feed.
Woman Killed, 17 Wounded in Terror Attack in Central Israeli City of Ra'anana
Among the wounded are at least one person in critical condition and two people in serious condition, according to Magen David Adom emergency services
A 79-year-old Israeli woman was killed, and 18 people were wounded on Monday in a ramming and stabbing attack in three different scenes in the central Israeli city of Ra'anana.
Israeli forces arrested two terrorists following a manhunt.
Here are a few more visuals if you do not mind.
This is such a “normative” event in Israel that I tend to doubt if the International News Feeds will pick it up. And if they do, they will call the “terrorists” either “militants” or “Freedom Fighters” or “suspected [whatever noun or adjective you want to put here].”
So, I began wondering and thinking back to all the posts, articles, podcasts, and videos I read and listened to about the current war. And the real question behind all words is a simple “Why?”
Why do we do what we do? Why can’t we lie back and take it? Why can't we be silent? Why do we always have to fight back?
**This Post may be too long for your email provider. In that case, just read it online.
I can be lazy here and supply the following URL and tell you to read it. Maybe you will click on it, but probably not. So, I copied only some of it below. I repeat: only some of it!
But before we begin, here is the URL: Wave of Terror 2015-2023
And if you so desire, here is a PDF of that web page.
I am not naive, so I do not expect anyone to read this document thoroughly. Just browse through this. It is less than 50% of the webpage or PDF document. Then think about it. Would you live with this in your backyard? Would you put up with it? Would you let it go on for years and years without ultimately putting an end to it? I tend to doubt it. No sane person would live like this.
Nor do I expect anyone to take my word for it. The below covers until 2018, not 2015. Simply too long for this post. (You can view the PDF or the webpage for a full report.)
It does not cover the Hamas war. It does not cover anything after April 2023.
However, these are facts. These are statistics. This is our reality.
91 months of terror: 13 September 2018 - April 2023
Since September 2015, Israel has experienced a wave of terror perpetrated by individuals, many of them very young, inspired by vicious incitement in Palestinian social and traditional media and urged on by the Palestinian leadership. The Palestinian Authority goes so far as to pay convicted terrorists a monthly allowance – the more serious the offense, the more money they receive. The families of terrorists killed by Israeli security forces during a terror attack receive a monthly "pension" as well.
On 30 March 2018, Hamas instigated a campaign that was billed as a peaceful civilian protest, but was actually an excuse for violent riots on the Gaza Strip-Israeli border. In addition, kites and helium balloons with incendiary material attached have been launched from the Gaza Strip to the Israeli side. The resulting fires (over 2,000) have destroyed thousands of acres of forests and agricultural land (8,747 acres as of July 2019), with a huge cost to farmers and to the entire ecosystem of the western Negev. Experts estimate that it will take decades for the area to recover. During this same period, rocket launches from the Gaza Strip have also increased. An additional cost that cannot be estimated in money is the cost of the trauma suffered by the civilian population in southern Israel, especially the children.
In May 2019, Hamas and Israel entered into an agreement for a six-month ceasefire. Attacks have decreased but not ceased altogether.
In November 2019, there was a hiatus in the Hamas-orchestrated border riots. The arson kites and balloons have also decreased drastically.
In December 2019, the organizers of the March of Return announced that the weekly border protests would be suspended until the end of March 2020, when they will be resumed on a monthly basis, or on "prominent national occasions." (Note: March 30 is Land Day, a day commemorating violent clashes between Arab Israelis and Israeli forces in 1976, in reaction to a government plan to expropriate land in the Galilee for state purposes.) Predictably, the Gaza fence protests did not achieve their stated goals: to end the "siege on Gaza" and to achieve the "right of return" for Palestinians whose grandparents once lived in Mandatory Palestine. (It should be noted that, while Israel controls the border crossing points between Israel and the Gaza Strip, commercial goods pass through daily.)
Beginning May 10, 2021, Hamas launched an eleven-day rocket attack that targeted Israeli cities, towns and villages, including Jerusalem and Tel Aviv, in which 12 civilians and one IDF soldier were killed and many more were injured.
According to the Meir Amit Intelligence and Terrorisn Information Center (ITIC), beginning in September 2015, there has been a wave of terrorist attacks which began on the Temple Mount and in east Jerusalem. The attacks later spread to Judea and Samaria and even crossed the Green Line into Israel under the battle cry of "Al-Aqsa mosque is in danger."
The current wave of terrorist attacks is part of the PA's strategy of "popular resistance" (i.e., popular terrorism) adopted by the PA and Fatah at the Sixth Fatah conference in August 2009. Statements by Fatah, Hamas and PIJ spokespersons have described the attacks as "heroic actions" and "the natural response to Israel's crimes".
The terrorist attacks, which had been concentrated in greater Jerusalem, spread to other locations in Israel, including Kiryat Gat in the south, Tel Aviv, Afula in the north, and Gan Shmuel (near Hadera) and Raanana (in the center of the country). The attacks have been carried out by young lone terrorists, most of them from east Jerusalem, and some from Judea and Samaria. There were also two Israeli Arabs (from Nazareth and Um el-Fahm), Palestinians staying in Israel illegally, two women and two children. They were motivated for the most part by the lie spread by the Palestinian media that Israel allegedly threatened Al-Aqsa mosque, as well as by the frustration, desperation and anger of the younger generation. Generally speaking, the terrorists have not been operatives of any established terrorist organization, and the current wave of terrorism has not been directed by any organization, but rather is directly inspired by the intensive incitement accompanying it.
According to the Israel Security Agency, October 2015 saw the beginning of a wave of terrorism that has led to 620 attacks (483 in the form of firebombs) in one month, compared to 223 in September. Eleven people (one foreign national and 10 Israelis) were killed in terrorist attacks in October, and 80 were injured, 37 of them moderately or more severely (one foreign national, 18 Israeli civilians, and 18 members of the security forces).
In November 2015, 10 people (one Palestinian and 9 Israelis) were killed in terrorist attacks. Among the non-fatal casualties, 22 were wounded in stabbings (including 5 in Jerusalem and 10 within Israel), 24 in vehicle attacks, and 12 in shootings. In December 2015, 3 civilians were killed. All three of the fatalities were caused by stabbings.
In January 2016, 5 Israelis were killed in terrorist attacks. In the major shooting attack on Dizengoff Street in Tel Aviv two civilians were killed as well as a taxi driver who picked up the attacker near the scene. Two Israeli civilians were killed in stabbing attacks.
In February 2016, 3 Israelis were killed in terrorist attacks. The decrease in terror attacks was manifest mostly in Judea and Samaria: 107 attacks, compared to January's 126.
In March 2016, terrorists killed one foreign national (in a stabbing attack in Jaffa on 8 March) and injured 26, 9 of which were injured in the abovementioned stabbing attack. Among the non-fatal casualties, 13 civilians and 13 security forces personnel were wounded.
In April 2016, terrorist attacks caused 18 non-fatal casualties, most of which (16) were injured in an IED attack in Jerusalem on 18 April. In addition, on 3 April, one civilian was injured in a stabbing attack in Rosh HaAyin and one border-police member was injured in a firebomb attack in Isawiya (Jerusalem).
In May 2016, terrorist attacks did not result in any fatalities. However, 12 Israelis – 4 civilians and 8 security personnel - were injured.
In June 2016, five Israelis were killed and 21 injured. Most of the fatalities were registered during the shooting in Tel Aviv on 8 June that left four dead and 15 wounded. An Israeli teenager was stabbed to death on 30 June in Kiryat Arba, Hebron, and another civilian was moderately injured. Non-fatal casualties include 2 civilians who were injured in a vehicle-ramming attack near Qiryat Arba (24 June); a member of the security forces in a firebomb attack in Isawiya, northern Jerusalem, (29 June); 2 civilians in a stabbing attack in Netanya on 30 June.
